What We Do
Home Adaptability
Our nonprofit is dedicated to empowering stroke survivors to regain independence and safety in their own homes through professional, no-cost or low-cost home modifications. After a stroke, many individuals face challenges with mobility, balance, strength, and coordination—often leading to increased fall risks, difficulty with daily activities, and emotional strain from losing the comfort of familiar surroundings. We step in to bridge that gap by transforming homes into supportive, accessible environments that promote recovery, prevent injuries, and help survivors stay out of facilities longer.
Why Home Adaptability Matters for Stroke Survivors
Research, including studies from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, shows that targeted home safety interventions—like grab bars, ramps, shower seats, and better lighting—can significantly reduce the risk of death in the year following hospital discharge and enable more survivors to live independently. The transition home after rehabilitation is critical: what felt safe in a hospital or rehab center can suddenly feel hazardous in a personal residence with stairs, narrow doorways, slippery floors, or poor lighting. Our program addresses these barriers directly, restoring confidence and quality of life.
Specific Home Adaptabilities Mentioned
The study emphasized practical, targeted changes to address common post-stroke hazards:
-
Grab bars and handrails (e.g., near toilets, showers, tubs, and stairs) for support during transfers and mobility.
-
Shower seats and handheld shower hoses for safe bathing.
-
Ramps (e.g., wheelchair ramps or threshold ramps) to eliminate steps or uneven surfaces.
-
Raised toilet seats with arms.
-
Non-slip mats and flooring in bathrooms and high-traffic areas.
-
Improved lighting (e.g., motion-sensor lights) for dark walkways.
-
Widened doorways and reorganized furniture/closets for easier access with walkers, wheelchairs, or scooters.
Our Home Adaptability Process
Recovering from a stroke can make everyday tasks at home challenging. Our Home Adaptability Assistance Program is designed to help stroke survivors create a safer and more accessible living environment. Through this program, we provide financial and need-based assistance for home modifications that improve mobility, safety, and independence. Depending on the survivor’s needs and available resources, assistance may include improvements such as grab bars, handrails, ramps, bathroom safety modifications, and other accessibility upgrades that help make daily living safer and easier.
How the Process Works
-
Complete the Application – Survivors or caregivers must fill out the program application in full so we can properly evaluate the request.
-
5-Day Review Period – Once your application is submitted, our team will review it through a 5-day approval process to determine eligibility and level of assistance.
-
Home Evaluation – If approved, a member of our team will contact the survivor to schedule a home evaluation to assess specific safety and accessibility needs.
-
Adaptation Planning – After the evaluation, we will determine what modifications may be provided based on need, safety priorities, and available funding.
-
Our goal is to help stroke survivors live safely, maintain independence, and continue their recovery at home.
